  1. 1.   as easy as pie means “very easy” = sangat mudah.

Example: He said it is a difficult problem, but I don’t agree. It seems as easy as pie to me!

Dia katakan ini masalah sulit, tapi aku tidak setuju. Tampaknya sangat mudah bagiku.

  1. 2.   be sick and tired of means “I hate” (also “can’t stand”)  = benci (juga tidak tahan)

Example: I’m sick and tired of doing nothing but work. Let’s go out tonight and have fun. = Aku benci tidak berbuat apa-apa selain kerja. Mari kita keluar malam ini

  1. 3.   bend over backwards means “try very hard” (maybe too much!) = berusaha keras(mungkin terlalu keras)

Example: He bent over backwards to please his new wife, but she never seemed satisfied. = Dia berusaha keras untuk menyenangkan istrinya yang baru, tetapi istrinya tak pernah kelihatan puas.

  1. 4.   bite off more than one can chew means “take responsibility for more than one can manage” =  mengambil tanggungjawab lebih dari kemampuannya

Example: John is so far behind in his studies. Besides classes, he plays sports and works at a part-time job. It seems he has bitten off more than he can chew. = John sampai sekarang ketinggalan pelajarannya. Selain belajar di kelas, dia bermain olahraga dan kerja paruh waktu. Tampaknya mengambil tanggungjawab lebih dari kemampuannya

  1. 5.   for good: means permanently, for ever” = selamanya.

Example: Mr. Ali lived in Bekasi for five years but he’s come back home for good now = Tn Ali tinggal di Bekasi selama 5 tahu tapi dia sudah pulang selamanya sekarang.

  1. 6.   change one’s mind means “decide to do something different from what had been decided earlier”= memutuskan untuk melakukan sesuatu berbeda dari yang diputuskan sebelumnya (berbah pikiran)

Example: I was planning to work late tonight, but I changed my mind. I’ll do extra work on the weekend instead. = aku merencanakan kerja telat nanti malam, tapi aku berubah pikiran. Tapi aku akan mengerjakan pekerjaan tambahan pada akhir pekan.

  1. 7.   Cut it out! means “stop doing something bad” = berhenti melakukan sesuatu yang buruk

Example: That noise is really annoying. Cut it out! = suara berisik itu benar-benar mengganggu. Hentikan!

  1. 8.   drop someone a line means “send a letter or email to someone” = mengirim surat atau email kepada seseorang

Example: It was good to meet you and I hope we can see each other again. Drop me a line when you have time. = bagus ketemu dengan kamu san aku harap kita bisa saling bertemu lagi. Kirim surat padaku jika kau punya waktu.

  1. 9.   figure something out means “come to understand a problem” =  memahami masalah (menggambarkan)

Example: I don’t understand how to do this problem. Take a look at it. Maybe you can figure it out. = Aku tidak mengerti cara menyelesaikan masalah ini. Mungkin kau bisa memahami maslah ini.

  1. 10.   fill in for someone means “do their work while they are away” = mengerjakan pekerjaannya ketika mereka tidak ada

Example: While I was away from the store, my brother filled in for me. = ketika aku tidak ada di took, saudaraku mrngrjakan pekerjaanku.

  1. 11.   in ages means “for a very long time” = lama sekali

Example: Have you seen Joe recently? I haven’t seen him in ages. = Apakah kau melihat John baru-baru ini? Lama sekali aku tidak melihatnya.

  1. 12.   give someone a hand means “help” = menolong

Example: I want to move this desk to the next room. Can you give me a hand? = aku ingin memindahkan meja ini ke ruang sebelah. Bisakah kau menolong aku?

  1. 13.   hit the hay means “go to bed” (also “hit the sack”) = tidur.

Example: It’s after 12 o’clock. I think it’s time to hit the hay. = sudah jam 12 lewat. Saya piker sudah waktunya tidur.

  1. 14.   in the black means “the business is making money, it is profitable” = usahanya menghasikan uang, beruntung.

Example: Our business is really improving. We’ve been in the black all year. = usaha kita sungguh meningkat. Kita beruntung sepanjang tahun.

  1. 15.        in the red means “the business is losing money, it is unprofitable” = usahanya tidak menghasikan uang,tidak beruntung.

Example: Business is really going poorly these days. We’ve been in the red for the past three months. = Usaha kita semakin merosot sekarang ini. Kita,tidak beruntung.selama tiga bulan terakhir.

  1. 16.   in the nick of time means “not too late, but very close!” = tidak terlambat.

Example: I got to the drugstore just in the nick of time. It’s a good thing, because I really need this medicine! = Aku sampai apotik tidak terlambat. Ini bagus, karena aku benar-benar butuh obat ini.

  1. 17.   keep one’s chin up means “remain brave and keep on trying” = masih berani dan terus berusaha

Example: I know things have been difficult for you recently, but keep your chin up. It will get better soon. =Aku tahu kau mendapat kesulitan akhir-akhir ini, tapi usahakan terus.Akan segera membaik.

  1. 18.   know something like the back of your hand means “know something very, very well” = mengenal sesuatu dengan sangat baik

Example: If you get lost, just ask me for directions. I know this part of town like the back of my hand  = jika kau tersesat, mintalah petunjuk padaku. Aku tahu kota ini dengan sangat baik.

  1. 19.   once in a while means “sometimes, not very often” = kadang-kadang, tidak sangat sering.

Example: Have you been to the new movie theater? No, only see movies once in a while. I usually stay home and watch TV. = Sudahkah kamu ke Gedung bioskup? Tidak, hanya nonton film kadang-kadang. Saya biasanya tinggal di rumah dan nonton TV.

  1. 20.   sharp means “exactly at a that time” = Tepat pada saat itu

Example: I’ll meet you at 9 o’clock sharp. If you’re late, we’ll be in trouble! = Aku akan menemui kamu pkl 9 tepat.

  1. 21.   sleep on it means “think about something before making a decision” = berpikir ttg sesuatu sebelum ambil keputusan

Example: That sounds like a good deal, but I’d like to sleep on it before I give you my final decision. = kedengarannya seperti perjanjian yg bagus, tapi aku mau berpikir sebelum aku ambil keputusan terakhir.

  1. 22.   take it easy means “relax” = santai

Example: I don’t have any special plans for the summer. I think I’ll just take it easy. = Aku tak punya rencana khusus untuk musim panas. Aku kira aku akan santai saja.

  1. 23.   to get the ball rolling means “start something, especially something big” = memulai sesuatu, terutama sesuatu yang besar.

Example: We need to get this project started as soon as possible. I’m hoping you will help me get the ball rolling. = Kami perlu memperoleh proyek ini sesegera mungkin. Aku berharap kau akan membantuku memulai.

  1. 24.   up to the minute means “the most recent information” informasi terkini.

Example: I wish I knew more about what is happening in the capital city. We need more up to the minute news. = Seandainya aku tahu lebih banyak tentang apa yang sedang terjadidi ibu kota. Kita perlu berita terkini yang lebih banyak.

  1. 25.   twenty-four/seven means “every minute of every day, all the time” = setiap saat setiap hari , sepanjang waktu

Example: You can access our web site 24/7. It’s very convenient! = Kau bisa mengakses website kami setiap saat. Sangat nyaman.

 

 

26. all of a sudden means “unexpectedly”, used to describe something that happens very quickly  “tiba-tiba/ tak terduga” digunakan untuk menggambarkan sesuatu yg terjadi sangat cepat.

Example: He had just gone to bed when all of a sudden the phone rang. = Dia baru saja tidur ketika tiba-tiba telpon bordering.

27. be all ears means “eager and ready to listen” = ingin sekali dan siap mendengarkan

Example: Go ahead and speak. I’m all ears! = Silakan dan berbicaralah. Aku ingin sekali dan siap mendengarkan.

28. be fed up with means “to hate something now, even though I may have liked it before” = tired of = bosan

Example: I’m fed up with my job! I think I should start looking for a new one. = Aku bosan pekerjaanku! Aku piker aku harus mulai mencari pekerjaan baru.

29. to change one’s mind: means “ to make a new and different decision or choice”= merubah pikiran

Example: I wanted to go to Bandung for my holiday, but I’ve changed my mind about that now = Saya ingin pergi ke Bandung, tapi saya sudah berubah pikiran tentang hal itu sekarang.

30. to have agood time means “to enjoy oneself” = bersenang-senang

Example: Did you have a good time in your last vacation? = Apakah kamu bersenang-senang dalam liburanmu yang lalu.

31. cost an arm and a leg means “very expensive” = sangat mahal

Example: I’d really like a new car, but they all cost an arm and a leg. = Aku benar-benar suka mobil baru, tapiu harganya mahal sekali

32. In short: means “briefly, in a few words” = Singkatnya, pendek kata

Example: In short, we should struggle for our country Indonesia = pendek kata, kita harus berjuang untuk Negara kita Indonesia.

33. fresh out of something means “to have no more of something” = kehabisan sesuatu.

Example: I have to go to buy some more milk. It seems we’re fresh out now. = Aku harus pergi membeli susu lagi. Kelihatannya kita sudah kehabisan sekarang.

34. to get it (often negative) means “to understand” = mengerti
Example:
What did the teacher say? I didn’t get it. Did you? = Apa yang dikatakan guru? Aku tidak mengerti. Kau ngerti?

35. got a minute? means “Do you have time right now?” =  Apa kau punya waktu?
Example:
Hey, Joe, got a minute? I have something to show you. =  Hey, Joe, Apa kau punya waktu?

36. give someone a hand means “help someone” = menolong sesorang.
Example:
Could you give me a hand moving this table? It’s quite heavy. = Bisakah kau menolong meminahkan meja ini? Berat sekali.

37. grab a bite to eat means “quickly go get something to eat” = cepat mendapat makanan
Example:
I’m going to go grab a bite. I’ll be back in a few minutes. = Saya akan pergi cepat mendapat makanan

38. drive someone up a wall (or “drive someone crazy”) means “to make someone very angry” = membuat orang marah sekali
Example:
My neighbor practices the piano every night, but he’s terrible. It’s driving me up the wall! = Tetanggaku latihan piano setiap malam. In membuatku marah sekali

39. to hang on means “to wait” = menunggu

Example: Hang on a few minutes. I have to make a phone call and then I’ll be able to join you for lunch. = Tunggu sebentar. Saya harus menelpon lalu aku akan bisa ikut kamu makan siang.

40. hard headed means “stubborn” or “unwilling to change an opinion or idea = keras kepala atau tidak mau merubah pendapat.
Example:
I can’t work with Joe any more. He’s so hard headed! = Aku tidak bisa bekerja dengan Joe lagi.

41. have a change of heart means “change a previous decision” = merubah keputusan sebelumnya
Example:
I thought I would change jobs, but now that my boss is treating me with more respect, I’ve had a change of heart. = Aku pikir aku akan ganti pekerjaan, tapi aku sudah merubah keputusan sebelumnya

42. have mixed feelings about something means “to be uncertain” = menjadi tidak yakin.
Example:
I have mixed feelings about Joe. He’s a very good teacher, but he has a very strange sense of humor! = Aku ia guru yangsangat baik, tapi dia punya rasa humor yang sangat aneh.

43. head out for means “to start on a long trip” (but it could be within a big city) = memulai perjalanan jauh
Example:
We’re heading out for the countryside to pick some apples. Would you like to join us? = Kita akan memulai perjalanan jauh keluar kota untuk mengambil buah apel. Maukah kau ikut kami?

44. How come? means “Why?” = Mengapa?/ Bagaimana bis begitu?
Example:
How come we don’t go to the movies any more? I guess we’re too busy to enjoy ourselves these days. = Mengapa kita tidak pergi ke bioskup lagi? Saya kira kita terlalu sibuk menyenangkan diri sekarang ini.

45. keep in touch (or “stay in touch”) means “do not stop communicating – send letters or call sometimes”  = jangan berhenti berhubungan- kirim surat atau telpon kadang-kadang.

Example: Don’t forget to keep in touch. I want to know how you’re doing while you’re away.  = Jangan lupa untuk terus berhubungan. Aku ingin tahu apa yang kau lakukan ketika kau jauh.

46. be kidding means “to joke or tease someone in a playful way”  = bercanda atau menggoda seseorang dengan cara main-main.

Example: No, I don’t really have three wives – I was just kidding! = Tidak. Aku sungguh tak punya istri tiga. Aku hanya bercanda.

47. look down on means “think someone or something is not good enough” =  Memandang seseorang atau sesuatu tidak cukup bagus, atau meremehkan..

Example: We shouldn’t look down on people just because they don’t have as much money as we do. = Kita seharusnya jangan meremehkan pada orang hanya karena mereka tak punya sebanyak uang kita.

48. make ends meet (often used negatively) means “to have enough money to buy everything we need” =  (digunakan untuk negative) punya cukup uang untuk membeli segala sesuatu yang kita butuhkan.

Example: Even though I make more money than last year, we just can’t seem to make ends meet. =  Meskipun aku menghasilkan uang lebih banyak dari pada tahun lalu, kita kelihatannya tak bisa membeli yang kita butuhkan.

49. miss the boat means “to miss an opportunity” =  kehilangan kesempatan.

Example: The sale ends today at noon. If we don’t hurry, we’re going to miss the boat! = Penjualan selesai jam 12  siang  hari ini. Jika kita tidak buru-buru, Kita akan kehilangan kesempatan.

50. next to nothing means “to cost very little” =  harganya murah sekali

Example: I went to the new discount store and bought these new shoes for only five dollars. That’s next to nothing! = Aku pergi ke toko baru yg berdiskon dan membeli sepatu ini hanya dengan  lima dolar.

51. by and by = nanti suatu ketika, nanti

Example: I must go now, but I’ll be coming again by and by = Saya harus pergi sekarang namun saya akan dating lagi nanti.

52. in case of =  means “if” = andai kata

Example: in case of rain, the party will be postponed. = Jika hujan pesta akan diundur.

53. come round = means “visit” = singgah, mampir

Example: Come round and see me after dinner = Mampir dan tengok saya setelah makan malam.

54. carzy about = mean “love” = tergila-gila.

Example: I am crazy about you  = Saya tegila-gila padamu.

55. day after day = dari hari ke hari

Example: It rained day after day, without stopping = Hujan dari harike hari tanpa berhenti.

56. in force = berlaku

Example: The new rules have been in force for two or three years =

Undang-undang yang baru itu berlaku untuk dua atau tiga tahun.

57. get away(from) = mens “escape” = meloloskan diri (dari)

Example: The thieves got away with a lot of money = Para pencuri itu meloloskan diri dengan banyak uang.

58. grow into = means “become” = menjadi

Example: She grew into a beautiful woman = Dia telah menjadi wanita yang cantik.

59. here and there = di sana sini

Example: The country was wild, but here and there were signs of human life = Negri itu liar, tetapi di sana sini ada tanda-tanda kehidupan manusia.

60. On the one hand…..On the other hand = di satu pihak…di pihak lain, sebaliknya.

Example: On the one hand I want to travel abroad, but on the other hand I don’t want to give up my job = Di satu pihak saya ingin bepergian ke luar negri, tetapi di lain pihak saya tidak ingin mengorbankan pekerjaan saya.

61. break the ice = memecah kebekuan

Example: We must break the ice at the first meeting = Kami harus memecahkan kebekuan pada pertemuan pertama.

62. in stead of = sebagai ganti, alih-alih

Example: Drink tea in stead of coffee = Minum the sebagai ganti kopi.

63. jump at = ingin sekali menerima

Example: He jumped at the chance = Dia ingin sekali menerima kesempatan itu.

64. just about = hamper, nyaris

Example: I have met just about everyone = saya telah bertemu hamper setiap orang

65. keep up with someone = terus berhubungan dengan eseorang.

Example: How many of your old school friends do you keep up with? = Berapa banyak dari teman-teman sekolah lama yang terus berhubungan denganmu?

66. knock somebody out = memukul lawan hingga tak dapat bangkit.

Example: He’s knocked out by his opponent in the first round = Dia dipukul jatuh oleh lawannya di ronde pertama.

67. know-how : pengetahuan dan kecakapan mengenai sesuatu.

Example: I don’t have the know-how to be able to benefit from situation = Saya tidak memiliki pengetahuan dan kecakapan menangani sesuatu untuk mendapatkan keuntungan dari situasi.

68. last but not least = terakhir tapi tidak kalah pentingnya dari yang lain.

Example: last but not least, I’d like to thank all the catering staff = Saya ingin menyampaikan terima kasih kepada seluruh pegawai catering.

69. laugh at someone/ something = mentertawakan seseorang/sesyatu.

Example: We all laughed at Tukul when he said he believed in ghost.= Kami sesua mentertawakan Tukul ketika diA berkata dia percaya dengan hantu.

70. little by little ; sedikit demi sedikit, secar perlahan-lahan.

Example: Litle by little the snow disappeared= perlahan-lahan salju itu menghilang.

71. look ahead : berpikir mengenai apa yang akan terjadi di masa dating.

Example: Have you looked ahead to what you will do in five years time? = Sudahkah kamu berpikir tentang apa yang akan kamu kerjakan dalam waktu lima tahun mendatang?

72. as a matter of fact : yang sebenarnya.

Example: I’m going there tomorrow, as a matter of fact. = saya kan pergi ke sana besok, sebenarnya.

73. at every moment = terus menerus, setiap saat.

Example: At every moment. We have still to face the great difficulties= terus menerus kami masih harus menghadapi kesulitan yang besar.

74. more and more = terus menerus menjadi lebih banyak dalam jumlah.

Example: More and more people are buying personal computer = Makin banyak orang membeli computer pribadi.

75. by myself = sendiri

Example: I finished my job by myself = Saya menyelesaikan pekerjaan itu sendiri (tanpa bantan).

76. Pay on the nail = membayar tunai.

Example: I have no complains about my ustomers. They pay on the nail = Saya tidak mempunyai keluhan mengenai para pelanggan kita. Mereka membayar tunai.

77. once and for all : sekarang dan untuk yang terakhir, akhirnya.

Example: I’m warning you once and for all = Saya memperingatkan kamu sekarang dan untuk yang terakhir.

78. in particular:  means “ particularly, especially” = terutama.

Example: The whole meal was good but the fish in particular = Seluruh makanan baik tetapi terutama sekali ikan

79. pass away:  means “die” = meninggal

Example: Her father passed away three monhs ago. = Ayahnya meninggal tiga bulan yang lalu.

80. in person : means “present physically” = hadir secara fisik.

Example: The winner will be there in person to collect the prize = Sang pemenang akan berada di sana secara fisik untuk mengambil hadiah.

81. rain cats and dogs : means “ rain havily” digunakan dalam bentuk continuous tense, = hujan turun dengan lebat.

Example: It is raining cats and dogs now = Sekarang hujan  turun dengan lebat.
